DEMETER

2023-ongoing

Ex voto are the goods, of various workmanship and form, that people offer to the deity to express their gratitude or to ask for his intercession when earthly powers cannot help them.  These are objects in which desire, fear and hope converge: they represent tangible ways in which marked change can take place. Demeter emphasizes ex votos in Italy, providing an overall picture that spans paganism and Christian religion. Votive cookies such as 'mastazzoli' and 'vutureddhi' whose origins are often associated with the cult of the Greek deity Demeter, goddess of fertility and protector of the fields, are still made in southern Italy and used for the purpose of making a wish and achieving positive changes.  In addition, rituals such as the ritual of the Maio, which involves the construction of a structure woven from pine branches and covered with votive taralli, are still practiced in some towns in Calabria. Demeter expresses the Italian people's desire for revenge, while also shedding light on issues related to increasingly neglected landscapes and through the use of mystery and contemporary language.

Demeter photographs were printed on biscuitsvotives and eaten following the ‘rituals’ of the ASMR videos ofTik Tok. The images slowly disappear, detach themselvesfrom their support and become crumbs.
